Your Security Dongle And You
I’ve done my own sleuthing to bring you some information on the upcoming USB security dongle from Jagex.
Earlier this week, I reported on a growing story on the Runescape website about a feature Jagex is planning to create in the future, based on player feedback; the Security dongle. By creating a unique pin, this device keeps your account safe and essentially impervious to account theft.
The device is not exactly a new concept. Both World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XI use a similar system. There has been a lot of misunderstanding as to how the dongle will work, so here’s a comprehensive list.
- The system works by displaying a six digit number, that changes every minute. By tying the device to your account, it adds an extra, dynamic password that can’t be spoofed and can only be used once. It’s like changing your password every minute without worrying about keyloggers.
- The device is not plugged in. It’s USB-Sized, and displays a 6 digit number that changes every minute and must be layered on top of your password to use. It can’t be read by hackers because it’s not plugged in.
- Because the device is not plugged in, it is compatible with all computers and operating systems that, obviously, can run Runescape/FunOrb.
- This isn’t a snowball effect for Jagex selling accessories for in-game benefits.
- According to Andrew Gower, they may end up losing money on these, so it isn’t a profit generator.
- The battery lasts 5 years.
- Lost dongles will be dealt with in much the same manner as losing your credit card; IE: getting a new one shipped to your house.
- A system for people who lose theirs and prefer not to buy a new one is in development, nothing set in stone.
More on the dongle as it comes out.
