Three Dollar War: Needs to Stop

April 24, 2009 Omali 9 comments

There’s been a civil war brewing in FunOrb, that’s simmered for the better part of the year, but has really escalated over the past few months. The ever going battle between members and free players over the three dollar difference in service. Read more…

Pirate Empires Part 4: When Push Comes To Shove

Some Thoughts:

April 22, 2009 Omali 3 comments

I’ve been trying to make Planet FunOrb into a more professional looking website, and part of that includes maintaining deadlines which I have never been that great at meeting. That being said, going off some feedback I’ve received, Planet FunOrb will be undergoing the following changes:

  1. Reviews are coming back, in full. Thanks to the economy, I now have more off-work time (No, I haven’t been fired or laid off) to work on the website. Reviews will of course include the stuff I promised last year, being tips/tricks, video gameplay, and general information on the games.
  2. Old articles will be revisited. Expect an Arcanists Review 2.0 (covering the updates and such) in the next month or so, and a few of the older articles will be rewritten.
  3. Segregating Arcanists was a highly successful mini-series, and I’m going to be starting  a few more in that line. I’m finishing up a new edition, and later today it’ll be published called “Three Dollar War” detailing the ongoing problems between free players and members. The idea of mini-series is, indeed, to replace the categories list after consolidating reviews to one category.
  4. More I Can’t Think of Now

So here’s the basic plan I have for the week:

  • Sunday: Thought Bubble Article
  • Monday: Revisiting an old article
  • Tuesday/Thursday: Reviews
  • Wednesday: Revisiting old articles
  • Friday: Day off, maybe.
  • Saturday: Making sure everything’s up to date.

Deko Bloko, Brick a Brac expansions

April 16, 2009 Omali Leave a comment

Hot on the heels of the Zombie Dawn and Miner Disturbanceexpansions, we return to two of our block-based arcade games and make them completely free to play!

All FunOrb players can now break wall-upon-wall of coloured bricks inBrick-a-Brac, and clear their screens of falling fruit in Deko Bloko – both of which are popular multiplayer titles. Everyone should also take advantage of the busier multiplayer lobbies and work on earning those last, tantalising Achievements.

Patch notes:

  • Brick-a-Brac and Deko Bloko levels are now 100% f2p.
  • Free Players can now play rated games on both games

Thought Bubble: The Rules

It’s been a year, and after quite a while of neglect, I have to interject:

What does a guy have to do to get some FunOrb related rules around here?

Rating System To Be Updated

April 3, 2009 Omali Leave a comment

Hello All,

We’ve been discussing the ratings systems in our games quite intently over the past few weeks here at Castle Jagex (in the FunOrb Dungeon of course). The ratings systems was a mechanism that we originally devised in order to match people of a similar ability together, it was never really designed to be a high score system, which is of course how it’s being used (hindsight, wonderful stuff). We are therefore thinking about ways to change the mechanism we use to display highscores for the multiplayer games.

We want our players to be able to compare themselves to each other in a way that makes sense but we also want to give you a reason to keep playing. We are therefore thinking of using what we call a “ratchet system”. This works by preventing you from dropping below a score point once it’s reach.

For example: Once you get a “metascore” (lets call it) of 1000 or more, you can never drop below 1000 again, same at 1500, same at 2000 and so on. This way you have an incentive to keep on playing as you have no concerns about dropping your “metascore” below a certain point.

We would keep the current rating system as an internal mechanism for matching players of a similar ability when playing rated games. You chaps would see the “metascore” system and be able to compare each yourselves using that and the current win/loss percentages that are already available (with some tweaks).

We don’t want to implement something like this without getting your feedback first. If we do this, the exact mechanism involved is to be decided, so with this principle in mind please let us know what you think. Do you like the idea? Do you not like it? Do you have any suggestions? Please let us know.

Now I’m sure your first question is, “What about ratings transferring?” I’ve put up a separate post in this forum on that topic.

Okay, let us know what you think and as ever…

Have fun folks,

Zombie Dawn: UK Levels

April 1, 2009 Omali Leave a comment

Hey there, orbsters!

All of the Zombie Dawn’s Washington D.C. levels have been opened up to free-players! That’s 24 levels (and three bonus levels) spread across four stages (The Mall, Power Plant, Police Precinct and White House). Only the first two of those four stages were available to free-players before today, so this update doubles the zombie fun for them.

Members content is also doubled with the UK levels expansion pack, which consists of four brand new stages (starting with Terminal 5), housing another complete batch of 24 levels (and three bonus levels) of extra-large zombie mayhem. In fact, some of the new levels are quite big!

There are six more power-ups to master (some from Zombie Dawn Multiplayer, some all new); double-decker buses; security doors that require specific humans to open them; corgis; hunters that come after your zombies; tea; and even enemy zombies trying to steal your humans!

The first few levels aren’t too hard – you should be able to play through them even if you didn’t complete the original game – but even Zombie Dawn experts will find the last few stages to be quite a challenge. As for those overlords who still don’t break a sweat, and who look with disdain upon the rest of us mere immortals who struggle with some levels, by all means try the game in Hard mode (you’re in for a real treat).

It’s been great fun working on this update. I think Zombie Dawn is a great game and I was really looking forward to expanding its mechanics and seeing what else could be harnessed from the gameplay.

Have fun(dead!) and Merry Zombie Day!

In Retrospect: The Launch

April 1, 2009 Omali 1 comment

In Retrospect is a piece I promised to you recently, and here it is.

The basic premise of “In Retrospect” is to look at the titles one year later to see how they have changed, if they have, and what the future holds. So today, we’re starting with the launch titles (There are 18 games to cover today, so I will be covering other games that have passed the one year mark next Friday)
